The number of patent applications showed a mysterious abnormal value once again.

In a previous four-part series, I reported a 10,000 surge in patent applications at the Japan Patent Office in September 2023. This increase coincided with SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son's announcement of 10,000 applications. However, a new surge of about 50,000 applications anticipated in December 2025 lacks a clear applicant, which will remain a mystery until published gazettes in June 2027. Additionally, preparing such a large number of applications would require the capacity of approximately ten major patent firms, but the number of patent attorneys in Japan has remained stable. The reasons behind filing 50,000 applications all at once also raise a mystery, as firms typically submit throughout the year. For further insights, I collaborated with Nikkei BP for an interview on this topic, and other experts have offered their analyses as well.
